Start NowA student of Anna University has accused a professor, A Gnanavel Babu, of sustained harassment over nearly three years, alleging repeated phone calls, forced interactions, coercion and intimidation despite complaints to college authorities and the Internal Complaints Committee. She has now taken her complaint to the police and, according to sources, Gnanavel Babu has been suspended.
Members of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) staged a protest near the Anna University campus today morning, condemning the alleged sexual harassment. Protesters demanded action against the accused and safeguards for students on campus.
In a written complaint submitted to the police, the industrial engineering student from the College of Engineering, Guindy, said the professor initially approached her under the pretext of academic guidance, project discussions and internship-related assistance. She alleged that he later used these as grounds to repeatedly call her and compel her to engage in personal conversations against her consent.
The student stated that the professor frequently called her, including during late hours at night, and forced her to respond. Even when she tried to avoid interaction, he allegedly continued to pressure her into conversations, causing prolonged mental distress, fear and anxiety.
She said the situation persisted over an extended period and affected her ability to concentrate on her studies. According to the complaint, the professor repeatedly contacted her under the pretext of offering internship opportunities and academic support but used these interactions to create situations that required personal engagement despite her clear reluctance.
Earlier complaints to Anna University
The student said in her complaint that she first informed her department authorities about the harassment but no effective action was taken. She was later advised to approach the Internal Complaints Committee under the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) guidelines and submitted a complaint there as well. However, she alleged that no meaningful action followed and the harassment continued.
She further stated that even after blocking his number, the professor continued to contact her through other means. The complaint also alleges that he attempted to intimidate her and created a hostile environment, making her feel unsafe within the campus. She said fear and pressure prevented her from speaking openly earlier.
The student has now approached the police seeking strict legal action against the professor and measures to ensure her safety.
Meanwhile, a member of the Students’ Federation of India said the university has suspended Gnanavel Babu following the complaint. There was no immediate official confirmation from Anna University regarding the suspension at the time of reporting. Despite attempts to contact college authorities and the university department there was no response from either.
