Assam: Y20 Summit to incorporate ideas of youths in policy proposals; Nearly 12,000 students participating

NEW DELHI: On the sidelines of India's presidency in G20 Summit 2023, the Youth20 (Y20) summit will be held in Assam, Guwahati. The first meeting of the Y20 group will be held from February 6 to 8, 2023. Over 250 international delegates are expected to be participating in the summit.

The three-day event will be focusing on five themes- future of work, climate change and disaster risk reduction, peace building and reconciliation, youth in democracy and health and well-being and sports. To create a deliberation process, in the run up to the Y20 meeting, over 50 universities and colleges across 34 districts in India began organising seminars, workshops, debates and panel discussions from January 19, 2023.

More than 12,000 college and universities students are expected to participate in these events. In addition to this, each higher education institutions will be organising awareness drive at 10 nearby schools to sensitise the schools about G20 groupings and functioning.

IIT Guwahati will be hosting a central event where 400 participants including prize winners of competitions from various participating colleges on February 7, 2023. The event will be mentored to understand Innovations and industry-academia linkages. They will also get an opportunity to interact with the international youth delegates to exchange ideas for a shared future.

Y20 is one of the eight groups under the G20. Every year, the country holding the presidency are responsible of hosting such events weeks prior to understand what the youth think and try to incorporate their suggestion into policy proposals. This aims to create connection between the G20 governments and the local youth. The Y20 India summit in 2023 will provide the India' with an opportunity to showcase its values and policy measures to the youth across the globe.

Speaking about the Y20 Summit at the curtain-raiser, union minister of youth affairs and sports, Anurag Singh Thakur, said: "The Y20 Summit is a unique opportunity to allow the youth to provide constructive policy inputs and to utilise the platform to voice their opinions for the world audience. The Youth 20 India Summit brings together the trustees of our future generations from across the G20 countries to deliberate, discuss and deduce innovative, sustainable and actionable solutions especially in the realm of social development. At the Y20 Summit, India will not only speak; but also provide an audience to youth from across the world, to be heard in the world’s largest democracy amongst those young leaders geared up with the baton to the future.”
