BHU gets Rs 50 lakh endowment for advancing mathematical science

Banaras Hindu University will use the amount received from US-based ARSI to promote research in mathematical science.
NEW DELHI: The Banaras Hindu University (BHU) has signed an agreement with the US-based ‘Foundation for Advancement of Arts and Sciences from India’ (ARSI) to promote teaching and research in mathematical sciences and as part of the agreement, the university has received Rs 50 lakh to support study and research in mathematics.
The Rs 50 lakh endowment, a BHU statement said, will be also used for the participation of external -- national and international -- scholars.

The BHU said it will use the amount to invite scholars as visiting professors, scholar-in-campus and adjunct professors for a specified duration. It will also be used for hosting international scholars at the university for short, medium, and long-term visits for lectures, seminars and other scholarly endeavours.
Bankteshwar Tiwari, DST-centre for interdisciplinary mathematical sciences, said a part of the amount will be utilised in organising lecture series, training programs and other academic activities in mathematical sciences at the BHU in cooperation with The Mathematics Consortium (TMC).
The agreement was signed by Ravi S Kulkarni, president, ARSI, and Arun Kumar Singh, registrar, the BHU. Kulkarni said he has great affection for the BHU and was deeply impressed with the nation building vision of Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya through education.
Recently, the university had introduced 12 new scholarships for the students of various programmes after it received an amount of Rs 60 lakh from its alumni. The donation was made by the alumni of the university, Kishori Jhunjhunwala and Jagdish Jhunjhunwala.
Kishori Jhunjhunwala had donated Rs 50 lakh for instituting ten scholarships of Rs 25,000 each while Jagdish Jhunjhunwala, an alumnus of the university donated Rs 10 lakh to institute two scholarships for the female students of BSc (hons) physics.
