BITS Pilani vice-chancellor Ramgopal Rao awarded VLSI Lifetime Achievement Award 2024
BITS Pilani V-C Ramgopal Rao was awarded at the 37th International Conference on very-large-scale integration design held in Kolkata.

NEW DELHI: The Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS Pilani) Ramgopal Rao has been awarded with the VSI Lifetime Achievement Award 2024 by the VLSI Society of India. He was awarded during the 37th International Conference on Very-large-scale integration (VLSI) Design held in Kolkata, India.
Rao was awarded in recognition for his outstanding contributions towards the development of the VLSI design and semiconductor ecosystem in India. The society said Rao’s immense dedication towards research in semiconductors and VLSI design research and education has laid a robust foundation, playing a pivotal role in positioning the countsry as a formidable ‘semiconductor nation’.
VSI team member Satya Gupta said, “Rao's exceptional contributions to the field of VLSI Design have left an indelible mark, inspiring countless individuals in the semiconductor community. This recognition is a testament to his unwavering commitment to innovation and leadership, qualities that continue to shape the future of VLSI technology. We are proud to celebrate this well-deserved honour with Rao and look forward to witnessing the continued impact of his visionary contributions."
Speaking at the event, BITS Pilani V-C Ramgopal Rao said, "I am deeply honored to receive the VSI Lifetime Achievement Award for 2024. This recognition is not just a personal achievement but a testament to the collective efforts of my students and collaborators over the past 25 years.”
The awards also reaffirms his commitment to advancing education, research, and innovation in VLSI design and the semiconductor ecosystem, Rao said. He added, “I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to India's journey towards becoming a strong 'VLSI Nation,' and I dedicate this award to everyone who has been part of my journey so far."

The decision to confer the VSI Lifetime Achievement Award 2024 was made by an expert panel consisting of a nine-member jury from the global semiconductor industry and academic organisations. The recognition comes from the leadership team of VLSI Society of India, the Conference organising team of VLSID-2024, and the steering committee of VLSI Society of India.
