‘BJP’s attempt to distort history’: NSUI protests NCERT’s ‘false’, ‘hateful’ depiction of partition, Ahoms

The National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) has launched nationwide protests against the National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT) for alleged ‘distortion of history’. Students and union members staged demonstrations in parts of Telangana, Assam, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh over blaming Congress for partition and depicting Ahom history ‘falsely’.

Calling the latest NCERT module on partition horrors RSS-BJP’s hate agenda, the students’ union held a massive protest at the Arts Faculty, Delhi University. The NCERT module distorts India’s history and spreads communal hatred among young students, it said.

Speaking on the issue, NSUI national president Varun Choudhary said: “The history of India will not be written with lies and hatred. When the nation was fighting for freedom, these people were standing with the British. The same traitors of that time are today blaming Gandhi ji, Nehru ji, and Sardar Patel ji with falsehoods. We will not allow the innocent children of this country to be victims of RSS and BJP’s distorted history.” The student body has demanded withdrawal of the ‘hateful’ and ‘misleading’ module.

NCERT recently constituted a committee to examine textbooks amid backlash. The council has been facing widespread criticism for introducing major changes to curriculum, with chapters and modules on Mughal "brutality" and removal of topics from history books , among others.

NSUI protests across India against NCERT

In Jharkhand, Ranchi University NSUI committee staged a protest at the university gate against the module. Students tore up photocopies of the module to oppose BJP's “distorted” education policy.

NSUI in Assam’s Baxa district organized a protest against the "BJP government's attempt to distort history" by publishing wrong information about the Ahom people in the NCERT history textbooks. The CKB Commerce College’s NSUI group also protested saying that the BJP government is attempting to distort history by displaying false information about the Ahoms in the NCERT history textbooks .

Moreover, NSUI staged a strong protest at Lucknow University. Students expressed their opposition by burning copies of the modules and stated that tampering with education will not be tolerated. "NSUI has always fought as the voice of students and will continue to fight in the future," the student organisation asserted in a post on X.
