NEW DELHI: The Central Government has given permission to Nitte (Deemed-to-be) University in Karnataka to start an off-campus centre at Nitte Village, Udupi on the advice of the University Grants Commission (UGC), according to a notification from the Ministry of Education. However, the Central government has given the approval subject to submission of a fulfilment report of some conditions.

The conditions of the central government are:

  • The existing infrastructure of Nitte Shankara Adyanthaya Memorial First Grade College (NSAMFGC), Udupi and Nitte Mahalinga Adyanthaya Memorial Institute of Technology (NMAMl) will either be transferred or new infrastructure will be created as may be required for setting up an Off-Campus.
  • Report of maintaining cadre ratio of faculty, as recommended by AICTE or UGC
  • The students already enrolled will continue and complete their degree from their respective affiliated University.

“The said off-campus shall be reviewed by the Commission after a period of five years from the date of Notification by the Government. This permission is subject to the compliance of the UGC (Institutions Deemed to be Universities) Regulations, 2019 and other relevant Norms / Rules / Regulations or Directions issued by the Central Government, UGC and other Statutory Councils, from time to time,” the notification said.

On June 4, 2008, the Central Government had declared the university consisting of AB Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences as an Institution Deemed to be University.

Nitte University’s off-campus centre

On August 4, 2021, the university applied for starting an off-campus centre at Nitte Village comprising two colleges – Nitte Shankara Adyanthaya Memorial First Grade College Udupi and Nitte Mahalinga Adyanthaya Memorial Institute of Technology and UGC was asked to examine the application.

UGC conveyed that the application of the deemed to be University was examined through an Expert Committee consisting of the nominee of All lndia Council for Technical Education (AICTE).

“The Commission considered the report of the UGC expert Committee and resolved to recommend approval of Off-Campus centre of Nitte (Deemed to be University), Mangaluru (Karnataka) at Nitte Village, Udupi keeping in view the NAAC grading (A+ CGPA 3.40) and NIRF- ranking, 2021 (77 in Universities category) of the Deemed to be University,” the notification added.

Further, the education ministry issued a letter on intent for fulfilment of certain conditions such as de-affiliation of the two colleges from the Mangalore University and Visvesvaraya Technological University, respectively. The UGC verified the compliance report and informed the ministry that the deemed university has fulfilled the conditions. Therefore, the Ministry gave its approval to start the off-campus centre.
