Coronavirus: One JNU school starts conducting semester exams online

NEW DELHI: The Jawaharlal Nehru University(JNU) announced that its School of Environmental Sciences has started conducting mid-semester exams online from today even as lockdown continues amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The decision by the JNU administration was made public by Vice Chancellor Mamidala Jagdish Kumar on Monday through his official social media handle.

“In order to complete the academic requirements for the MSc and MPhil or PhD degrees, the School of Environmental Sciences, JNU has started the mid-semester exams using digital means from today until May 4, 2020,” said Kumar.

On April 22, the JNU administration had put out a notice saying that the Academic Council had approved recommendations submitted by deans of schools on the methods of holding semester exams.

The notice was criticised by the JNU Teachers Association (JNUTA) who called the Academic Council’s decision to be “declared null and void”. They had alleged that some council members were not informed of the meeting.

JNUTA had demanded that the issue of semester examinations should be decided “after proper completion of the process of discussion”.

Universities across the country were shut down from March 16 due to the rising cases of coronavirus infections in the country forcing institutions to look for alternative means to finish the semester.
