Coronavirus: Reschedule all university exams and evaluation, says UGC

NEW DELHI: Following the directive from the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), the University Grants Commission (UGC) has asked all the universities to reschedule all ongoing examinations and evaluation work after March 31.

On March 18, MHRD asked UGC and other regulatory bodies to take adequate precautionary measures to control the spread of COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus. The UGC notice says: “All ongoing university examinations may be rescheduled after 31st March 2020. All evaluation work may be rescheduled after 31st March 2020 All Educational Institutions to maintain regular communication with the students and teachers through electronic means and keep them fully informed so that there is no anxiety amongst the students, teachers and parents.”

It has also asked all institutions to notify helpline numbers emails which students can access for their queries.

Some universities have already announced they are rescheduling exams.

Aligarh Muslim University announced it late on Wednesday night and University of Rajasthan announced it on Thursday morning, March 19. Meanwhile, Kashmir University (KU) has also postponed all undergraduate and post graduate exams till March 31 and Cluster University Srinagar (CUS) has postponed the admission process till further orders, reports the Greater Kashmir.

Like AMU, Chhatrapati Shahuji Mahara Ji Maharaj University in Kanpur, also known as Kanpur University, announced the cancellation of all exams on March 18. This came a day after Uttar Pradesh decided to shut schools and cancel exams.

Earlier on March 13, AICTE issued an advisory regarding the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) all the institutions requesting to take necessary precautions, which included avoiding large gatherings on campus. The UGC also issued similar advisory to all universities and colleges on March 5 for prevention of transmission of the virus. The total number of cases in India now stands at over 160, including those already cured and the three who died.
