COVID-19: Delhi Govt to start maths teaching online for Class 9

NEW DELHI: The Delhi Government has decided to collaborate with the Khan Academy to offer online mathematics classes to Class 9 students.

Shailendra Sharma, the education advisor to Delhi education minister told Indo-Asian News Service , “Students suffer most in Maths, so for the past 10 days, the government has been discussing with the Khan Academy how to support students of Class 9 in mathematics.”

"Last time we had seen the board results and noticed that only 71 percent of our students pass in maths in comparison to subjects such as social sciences and languages which we generally have a 97 per cent passing results," Sharma added.

About 1,000 teachers of government schools of Delhi will also be trained by Khan Academy through webinars.

The Khan Academy, an educational non-profit organization, has been developing learning material for the students of Class 9, in consultation with the Delhi Government.

The online classes will aim at revising the syllabus of the previous year and preparing the students for the new academic year.

Managing Director of Khan Academy, Sandeep Bapna said: “The programme will be a 10 week-long series,” Indo-Asian News Service reported.

The daily lessons will have two or three videos and a couple of exercises.

He added, "The parents will receive an SMS with a link to open that day's micro lesson.”

The online classes will start on April 27.

This partnership is expected to benefit more than three lakh students, Bapna added.

The Delhi Government is sending a daily SMS with general activities to 5,71, 661 parents of KG to Class 8 students. Daily SMS alerts are also sent for “happiness classes” at home for students KG to Class 12 and Mission Buniyaad activities. Mission Buniyaad is a school-readiness campaign for students of Classes 3 to 9 to enable them to read, write and do basic maths in three months. It is held at the beginning of the academic calendar.

The Government of Delhi has also tied up with Khan Academy to offer interactive audio-video based learning materials with self-assessment exercises to students for self- learning.

The Delhi Government has been conducting interactive classes via messages and voice recordings (IVR) for students of Nursery to Class 8 to maintain the continuity of education during the nationwide COVID-19 lockdown. The government has also been holding online classes for students of Class 12 since April 6.
