COVID-19: HRD Ministry meeting states on challenges of running schools

NEW DELHI: Ministry of Human Resource Development is holding a meeting of state education secretaries to discuss issues related to school education in their states. The ministry is also discussing the challenges states are facing in conducting online classes.

Anita Karwal, secretary of school education and literacy, is meeting of all state education secretaries. Union HRD Minister, Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’, informing about the ongoing meeting, has tweeted that the meeting is being held to discuss “health and safety of students, hygiene measures in schools and issues regarding online/digital learning in their states.”

Recently, HRD Minister during an interview revealed that schools will reopen after August 15. Schools and colleges all over the country have remained closed since March 24, when the nationwide lockdown started to contain the spread of coronavirus pandemic.

The HRD Ministry is discussing the issues related to running online classes as a large part of the population still does not have access to the internet, particularly in rural areas and smaller towns. To overcome this challenge, the government of India has also announced the launch of 12 new education channels through Swayam (Study Webs of Active Learning for Young-Aspiring Minds) Prabha. MHRD has been running 32 high-quality education channels through DTH across the country till now.
