NEW DELHI: Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology (VSSUT), Burla has been shut down till further order due to a surge of COVID-19 cases on campus.

“Positive cases of COVID-19 has been detected in the hostels of VVSUT, Burla,” says a notice from the district magistrate’s office, Sambalpur, issued on February 27, 2021.

“Urgent measures need to be taken for active contact tracing and social distancing”, the notice further said.

The same day, VSSUT issued a notice announcing that all undergraduate and postgraduate (UG and PG) classes will be held online and that students need not come to the campus till March 15, 2021. “All theory classes of 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th and 10th semesters of UG and PG programmes will be conducted online," said the notice. It also said that exams would be conducted "as per previous notification".

However, just a day later, on February 28, the university issued a notice postponing all exams scheduled for March 1, or Monday.

Some districts of Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Gujarat have already extended lockdown to contain the spread of the disease.

Colleges and higher educational institutions had reopened in the state in January this year for final year students.

Schools in Odisha started to function for class 9 and class 11 from February 8, 2021, following strict guidelines. Classes 10 and 12 had resumed from January 2021.
