The Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) has approved a research proposal submitted by Manas Upadhyay, assistant professor in the department of lifelong learning at Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University (CSJMU), as a major research project.

The project is titled “Modernity and the Transformation of Joint Families: Changing Roles and Responsibilities”. The institute states that it will examine the impact of modernity on the Indian joint family system, focusing on changes in family structure, decision-making processes, and the roles and responsibilities of family members. ICSSR has sanctioned a budget of Rs 15.10 lakh for the project, with an approved duration of 24 months.

According to the project outline, the study will analyse the influence of urbanisation, industrialisation, expansion of education, changing employment patterns, and modern lifestyles on joint families.

It will document how these factors have affected family relationships, authority structures, and household responsibilities. The research aims to contribute to an understanding of the present form of the family institution in Indian society.
