NEW DELHI: In a first, the Delhi Police has introduced a merit-based examination for the recruitment of Station House Officers (SHOs) in the department, as per various media reports. The move aims to enhance the transparency and efficiency of the selection method.

Being exclusively held for the cyber police stations handling digital crimes, the recruitment exam is scheduled for March 18 at the Delhi Police Academy. A total of 122 candidates have reportedly applied for 15 cyber SHO posts.

According to the reports, the Delhi Police exam will cover Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA), Cybercrime and IT skills, NDPS Act, POCSO Act, JJ Act, Arms Act, Delhi Police Act, Delhi Excise Act, Companies Act, etc. The question paper will comprise multiple-choice as well as descriptive questions, testing candidates’ legal knowledge, investigation skills, and decision-making abilities.

Calling it a ‘landmark decision’, a senior police officer told Times of India that the step will improve investigation skills of the upcoming police officers and raise their standards. The exam is a transparent and fair way of assessing the candidates which has been pending for a long time, he added.

Earlier, the Delhi Police used to recruit the officers on the basis of their seniority and experience in the field.
