NEW DELHI: The Delhi University academic council today approved the joining of two academic degree programmes simultaneously during its 1016th meeting at the council hall.

The DU academic council also discussed the twinning, joint and dual degree schemes with foreign institutions and credit transfer as per NEP 2020. A committee that was constituted by the DU to recommend modalities for implementation of these three proposal presented its recommendations. They presented detailed information regarding tie-ups with foreign institutions, joint and dual degrees and issuance of two academic degrees simultaneously.

The nod for joining two academic degree programs simultaneously was given after the presentation while the remaining items were kept for consideration in the next meeting. The meeting was held under the chairmanship of vice-chancellor Yogesh Singh.

New teacher promotion guidelines

The academic council of the DU also unanimously passed new regulations for promotion of teachers of its departments and centres with some modifications on Thursday. "The promotion guidelines for teachers of departments/centres of the University of Delhi were accepted with some modifications," an official said.

The new guidelines for promotions were opposed by different teachers groups' and independent activists. The meeting was adjourned by the VC as some representatives jumped to the well of the hall during the Zero Hour to register their protest against the change in the rules.

Under the proposed rules, to be eligible for promotion to different levels of assistant professorship, the application must have a specified minimum number of publications in the Scopus Index journal. The new rule also mandates publication in UGC care listed journals. This criteria mandate was not included in the UGC 2018 regulations for promotions of university teachers. The Delhi University Teachers' Association (DUTA) opposed the proposal saying it is discriminatory for those joining after July 1, 2024.

3,441 teachers appointed

The promotion guidelines for teachers of departments/centres of University of Delhi were also accepted with some modifications.

During the meeting, the VC while presenting the data regarding promotions in the colleges and departments of the University, said, that a total of 6,115 promotions have been made, out of which 3,912 are assistant professors, 1,425 associate professors, 691 professors and 87 are senior professors.

A total of 3,441 teachers have been appointed in colleges and university departments, including 3,374 assistant professors, 44 associate professors, seven professors and 16 principals/directors.

68,583 UG students admitted

Yogesh Singh informed the council that this year, a total of 68,583 admissions have been made in undergraduate programmes. Apart from these, there have been 11,196 admissions in postgraduate and 784 admissions in PhD programmes. He also said 98 orphan students have been admitted with full fee waiver under the special reservation scheme.

During the AC meeting, the recommendations of the standing committee of the council meeting held on November 23 were also considered. The eligibility criteria and admission process of four-year integrated teacher education programme (ITEP), including eligibility criteria for programmes of UG and PG under CUET (UG) 2024-25 for the academic session 2024-25 were presented.

Along with these, eligibility for BTech Computer Science and Engineering, BTech Electronics and Communication Engineering and BTech Electrical Engineering, BA LLB (Hons) and BBA LLB (Hons), PG Diploma in Cyber Security and Law (PGDCSL) criteria for application and criteria to establish equivalence of CUET (UG) subjects with the subjects studied in Class 12 were also suggested.
