DU to teach MA Journalism in Hindi, English; EC approves curriculum overhaul, introduces new courses

Delhi University will now teach MA in Journalism programmes in English and Hindi departments. The university will also launch BSc course in Nuclear Medicine Technology for the academic session 2025-2026 at the Army Hospital (R&R), Delhi Cantt under the Faculty of Medical Sciences.

The announcement was made by Yogesh Singh, vice chancellor of Delhi University while inaugurating the studio in the Journalism department of DU’s South Campus.

Notably, Singh also announced that DU will start a PG course in addition to PG Diploma in Journalism. “Committees have been formed for this. An expert committee has been constituted under the chairmanship of Prof. Shri Prakash Singh, Director, South Delhi Campus for the launch of 'Two-year Postgraduate Hindi Journalism Course' in the Hindi Department of South Campus. Apart from this, approval has also been given for the formation of a committee to start a new program called 'Postgraduate in English Journalism' under the English Department of DU,” he added.

The duration of the BSc course will be of three years plus one year internship (optional) under the department of radiology. Students in the BSc programme will be given the opportunity to work closely with nuclear medicine physicians and participate in the daily operations of the department of nuclear medicine, DU said in an official statement.

DU BSc in Nuclear Medicine Technology: Eligibility

Candidates, who are eligible for the course should be serving in the Indian Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS), and should have completed six years of service.

Applicant should have an excellent service record and passed higher secondary examination (academic) conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) or any other recognized equivalent State Board examination with minimum 50% marks (in aggregate) in Physics, Chemistry and Biology/Botany & Zoology subjects with English as one of the subjects.

“In case seats remain vacant due to insufficient candidates from Army failing to fulfil the above criteria, appointment will be offered to Medical Assistants of Indian Air Force and Indian Navy on the basis of equivalent criteria in the respective Medical Services,” the notice reads.

DU flagship programmes 'compromised'

Delhi University has approved the syllabi of semesters VII and VIII for various departments. Additionally, the syllabi of flagship departments like psychology , philosophy, sociology, history, and English, have been "mutilated and compromised" due to "undue interference by university officials who are not experts in these disciplines," Rudrashish Chakraborty, elected member of DUTA Executive and associate professor at Kirori Mal College, said.

The flagship programmes also saw a erosion of the academic autonomy of departments who have the expertise to prepare their syllabus as per recent research and global practices, Chakraborty said, adding that the "arbitrary changes" were made based on "ideological consideration and no academic rationale."

In the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, every UG course is of four years. However, students will have the option of multiple entry and exit. “They can leave the course whenever they want. In the earlier education policy, students did not get anything if they left the 3-year course midway, but the good provision in NEP 2020 is that there is a provision for students to get certificate to degree if they leave the course midway,” Vikas Gupta, registrar of the DU said.
