DU colleges' maths teachers seek general body meeting to discuss syllabus under FYUP

NEW DELHI: About 52 mathematics teachers of Delhi University colleges are seeking a general body meeting of all math teachers of the University of Delhi to discuss the proposed structure and syllabus of the new mathematics honours course under the four year undergraduate programme (FYUP). The teachers have written to the DU mathematics department head to hold a general body meeting of all math teachers to discuss the proposal before finalising it for the DU academic council.

The teachers stressed in the petition that the new maths syllabus should be finalised by Delhi University only after discussion with all college teachers. They asked to not approve this in parts.

"At the outset, we would like to point out that the entire structure and syllabus for four years should be placed before the academic council for its consideration, and not just the syllabus for the first year. Apart from the fact that students applying for admission have a right to know what they are going in for, this will also be in the interest of ensuring coherence and balance in an informed manner. Widespread consultation with college teachers, who have been teaching this course and are aware of the needs of undergraduate students, is desirable. For this a General Body meeting of all such teachers should be held, as was done in the past. We are deeply dismayed that not only was a GBM not called, but in a meeting of a committee of select representatives called by the Department, the concerns raised by several college teachers were brushed aside," the petition reads.

In the petition by the DU maths teachers, the concern regarding lacunae in the content and sequencing of papers was also expressed. They believe that these changes will damage the conceptual foundation of mathematics honours students and will adversely affect the ability of the students to do advanced work in the area. The petition also pointed out that certain content covered in five lectures is now proposed to be covered in 3 lectures. The teachers said that this is not feasible.
