NEW DELHI, OCTOBER 9: After nearly two and half years since the full-time Vice-Chancellor of the Visva Bharati University was sacked by the then President of India over various irregularities, Prof Bidyut Chakrabarty has been appointed as the next VC of the university.
The university has been in all the wrong news for the past three years and more so after the former VC was sacked. The varsity community is hopeful that with new VC assuming his duties in couple of days, it would regain its lost glory.
Prof Bidyut Chakrabarty has been associated with the University of Delhi, department of political science. He was one of the shortlisted candidates finalised by the search cum selection committee, the other shortlisted candidates include names like Abhijit Chakraborty, former VC Jadhavpur University; Asha Mukherjee, professor of philosophy at Visva-Bharati; and Sabujkali Sen, acting VC of Visva-Bharati.
However, Sabujkali Sen’s appointment as acting VC was also challenged in a court on the grounds of being ineligible for the post.
Prof Chakrabarty earned his PhD from London School of Economics and Political Science and has taught at some of the leading institutions in the country. His areas of interest include public administration, Indian politics, Indian political thought and movement, Indian nationalist movement.
