Following court’s order halting counting of votes over defacement of public property and violation of Lyngdoh committee recommendations , student organizations launched a drive to remove defacement including posters, banners, hoardings, and graffiti. A bench of Chief Justice-designate Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela rapped the university, holding it responsible for the “mess”. The court was hearing petitions filed by advocate Prashant Manchanda and some DU students.
The court also asked the DU vice-chancellor to take strict action and suggested annulment of DU elections. The bench recommended that the central university should defer the elections or disqualify the candidates and start nomination afresh or should allow polling but not declare the results till all the defacement is removed.
The voting for DU students' union elections officially began at 8:50 am and long queues of students were seen. Around 1.40 lakh students were eligible to vote for DUSU polls 2024. A total of 21 candidates are vying for different positions in students’ union, with eight contesting for the post of president, five for vice-president, and four each for the posts of joint secretary and secretary.
