NEW DELHI: A further "incentive mechanism" is being considered for the Institutes of Eminence scheme, said education minister, Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ today. Pokhriyal held a review meeting on the IoEs with ministry officials and discussed various challenges faced by institutions selected for the IoE status and their brand building.

Education minister wrote on Twitter: “What measures can be taken to accelerate the recruitment of #international faculty. The progress of IoEs shall be mapped with the indicators of THE/QS World University Rankings and international standards.”

Pokhriyal also shared that an incentive mechanism for institutions shall be developed to reward the IoEs that are doing well. The ministry has also decided that an integrated portal containing world-class research papers from all HEIs shall be made.

“Numerous measures shall be taken to engineer a better perception of IoEs. Officials were directed to develop a detailed strategy (with both qualitative and quantitative parameters) for brand building of the institutes,” wrote the education minister.

He also shared that the recommendations under the National Education Policy (NEP) such as Multiple entry-exit, online degrees, multidisciplinary, internationalization etc. shall be leveraged to ensure the success of the IoEs.

In 2017, the Government of India proposed to award the ‘Institutions of Eminence’ tag for around 20 institutions, 10 public and 10 private. The selected institutions will be given complete autonomy in running academic programmes, hiring faculty and collaborating with other institutions, to secure their place in top 500 institutions globally. Each of the 10 public Institutions selected as IoE will get financial assistance up to Rs 1000 Crore over the period of five years under this scheme.
