NEW DELHI: The Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA), in a letter to the union minister of health and family welfare Mansukh Mandaviya, requested to reduce the eligibility criteria for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Super Speciality (NEET SS) 2021 counselling mop-up round.

FAIMA said in the letter that a high cut-off will prevent a huge number of doctors willing to pursue super specialisation this year from meeting the cut-off criteria, resulting in vacant seats and wastage of one year for NEET SS 2022 preparation. According to FAIMA, about 889 superspeciality seats are vacant even after the second round of the NEET SS 2021 counselling.

In 2019, due to the reduction in the cut-off percentile, a large number of specialist doctors became eligible for the super speciality seats. But in 2020, when the cut-off percentile was not reduced, more than 700 seats were wasted, claimed FAIMA.

In a tweet, FAIMA also requested the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) and the National Medical Commission (NMC) to reduce the cut-off percentile. "Requesting @MoHFW_INDIA, @NBEMS_INDIA & @NMC_IND to reduce the eligibility criteria for NEET SS for mop up round of counselling in order to fill all the vacant seats and hence avoid seat wastage and less numbers of super specialists," tweeted FAIMA.
