Since GATE exam 2024 was conducted for some papers in multiple sessions, the scores are normalized to eliminate the difference in difficulty level of the different sets of question papers. The formula used for normalization of GATE scores is as follows:

The normalized marks of jth candidate in the ith session, denoted by Mij are computed as:

M i ̂, j = Mg t − Mg q / Mti − Miq (Mij − Miq) + Mg q

Mij is the actual marks obtained by the jth candidate in the ith session

Mgt is the average marks of the top 0.1% of the candidates considering all sessions

Mgq is the sum of mean and standard deviation marks of the candidates in the paper considering all sessions

Mti is the average marks of the top 0.1% of the candidates in the session

Miq is the sum of the mean marks and standard deviation marks of the session.

This year, IISc conducted the GATE 2024 exam for 30 papers instead of 29. The newly added paper was data science and artificial intelligence. The exam was held in centres within India only unlike last year when examination centres were available outside India.
