How to move from third-year to fourth-year UG programme? UGC chairman explains

The UGC guidelines states that the university may provide bridge courses, including online, to enable students to transition to the extended programme.

NEW DELHI: The University Grants Commission (UGC) chairman M Jagadesh Kumar today explained how students can move from third-year to fourth-year undergraduate (UG) programme. He said that the universities can provide bridge courses to fill the gaps while students move from third to fourth-year.

The UGC chief uploaded a explainer video and said: “Dear students, if you are planning to move to fourth-year from your third-year undergraduate programmes, please talk to the head of your institution and make sure you get the bridge courses is made available to you so that you can easily and seamlessly move from third to fourth-year.”

He further said that the statutory body has sent a letter to all universities asking them to introduce bridge courses for the UG students.

The four-year undergraduate programmes (FYUP) was formulated in line with the National Education Policy (NEP 2020). As per the curriculum and credit framework for four-year UG, a bachelor degree will be awarded in three years on completion of 120 credits and UG honours will be awarded upon completion of 160 credits. Moreover, students who undertake a research project in their four-year course will get honours degree with research specialisation.

“Students who have already enrolled and are pursuing a three-year UG programme as per the existing Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) are eligible to pursue a four-year undergraduate programme. The university may provide bridge courses (including online) to enable them to transition to the extended programme," the guidelines read.
