Multiple entry, exit, flexible degree options: UGC announces new FYUP curriculum framework

NEW DELHI: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has announced the new norms for Curriculum and credit framework for four-year undergraduate programmes (FYUP) today.

“Keeping in view of NEP’s recommendations, the UGC has revised the Choice Based Credit system and developed a new curriculum and credit framework for four-year UG courses,” the commission said.

According to the new FYUP framework, students will be provided with multiple entry and exit, flexible degree options with single major, double major, multi or interdisciplinary choices and a curriculum built with employability skills in addition to academic subjects.

UGC chairman Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar requested all higher educational institutions to implement the revised FYUP curriculum and credit framework. “I hope this framework will serve as a guiding document and help universities and colleges in undertaking the revision of the curriculum.

He also acknowledged the contribution of expert committee members under the chairmanship of RP Tiwari and UGC officials in developing the UG framework.

UG FYUP new norms: Highlights

Here are some of the highlight of the new norms of FYUP framework as announced by the UGC.

  • Undergraduate degree programmes of either 3 or 4-year duration, with multiple entry and exit points and re-entry options.
  • Students will get a UG certificate after completing 1 year (2 semesters) of study in the chosen fields of study, a UG diploma after 2 years (4 semesters), and a bachelor’s degree after a 3-year (6 semesters) programme of study.
  • A 4-year bachelor’s degree (honours) after eight semesters programme of study. If the student completes a rigorous research project in their major area(s) of study in the 4th year of a bachelor’s degree (honours with research).
  • Inclusion of credit-based courses and projects in the areas of community engagement and service, environmental education, and value-based education.
  • Introducing holistic and multidisciplinary undergraduate education that would help develop all capacities of human beings in an integrated manner.
  • Global Citizenship Education and education for sustainable development.

Among the main features of the new curriculum framework, students will be provided with option to switch to alternative modes of learning – offline, ODL, and Online learning, and hybrid modes of learning.
