IGNOU launches two-year MSc Data Science and Analytics under ODL mode

The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has introduced a new master of science (MSc) programme in data science and analytics under the open distance learning (ODL) mode.

The programme is being offered through the school of computer and information sciences (SOCIS) as a two-year degree course, aimed at meeting the growing demand for skilled professionals in data-driven roles across sectors.

MSc in Data Science and Analytics is designed to build strong computational and statistical foundations required for data analysis, interpretation, and problem-solving, the university said.

The curriculum focuses on the practical application of data science tools across domains such as business, healthcare, social sciences, and engineering, making it suitable for both fresh graduates and working professionals seeking to upgrade skills or transition into data science careers.

The course also offers a flexible exit option. IGNOU said students who complete the first two semesters (40 credits) can exit with a postgraduate diploma in data science and analytics. However, IGNOU clarified that there is no separate admission process for the diploma.

IGNOU MSc Admission: Eligibility and objectives

The masters course aims to prepare students for careers in the software industry, research, academia, and analytics-driven roles. Key objectives include managing and analysing large datasets, applying data science techniques to real-world problems, and developing industry-relevant analytical skills.

The total programme fee is Rs 13,000 per semester. As per the eligibility criteria, candidates with a bachelor’s degree of at least three years’ duration from a recognised university or institution will be considered for admission. The medium of instruction will be English.

The target learner group includes graduates interested in data analytics, IT professionals, researchers, academicians, government and corporate employees, and aspiring data science entrepreneurs.
