Developed by the Consortium of Institutions of Higher Learning (CIHL) in collaboration with IIIT Hyderabad's Centre for Educational Technology and Learning Sciences (CETLS), the revamped programme follows a practice-oriented approach to postgraduate education. It is designed to take students from foundational computing coursework to applied AI research, venture-building and industry experience.
The MSIT degree will be awarded by IIIT Hyderabad. The programme will be conducted at the institute's campus, with a tuition fee of Rs 1.5 lakh per semester.
Commenting on the programme, IIIT Hyderabad Director Professor Sandeep Shukla said the course is designed around the idea that students learn best when they apply their knowledge in practice. He said the programme aims to help students build strong foundations in computing and AI, work on research problems and develop the confidence to pursue opportunities in industry or venture-building.
The revamped programme is structured across four semesters, with students progressing from foundational learning to practical applications.
| Semester | Courses and activities |
| Semester 1 | Students will build computing foundations through courses in Learning to Learn with AI Tools, Algorithms and Data Structures, and Computer Systems. |
| Semester 2 | Students will work with faculty members and mentors at IIIT Hyderabad's research centres to build and deploy applied AI systems, alongside project-focused AI coursework. |
| Semester 3 | Students will form teams to develop working products and business plans around real-world problems. They will pitch their ideas to early-stage venture capitalists for seed funding. |
| Semester 4 | Students whose ventures secure funding will work towards launching their startups. Others will undertake a full-time industry co-op, working on production systems with an industry partner. |
The programme emphasises learning through building and deploying technology. By combining foundational coursework with research-centre experience, venture development and industry engagement, it provides opportunities for students to work on real-world problems and take their ideas towards implementation.
The programme is open to graduates who have completed 16 years of formal education and are willing to work with computer science, artificial intelligence and mathematics. Students in the final year of their degree who are awaiting results are also eligible to apply.
The admission process includes online registration, an aptitude evaluation through GRE, GATE or the MSIT Entrance Examination, as applicable, followed by interviews for shortlisted candidates.
Admissions for the January 2027 batch will be conducted in two cycles.
