IISER Pune third-year BS-MS student passes away; institute mourns ‘tragic demise’

A third-year BS-MS student of the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Pune campus has passed away. The institute’s director, Sunil S Bhagwat, has said in a statement that the police have launched an investigation and they will extend support for the investigation.

Trina Paul, a third-year BS-MS student, died on campus around 10 pm of August 16.

The director has also requested that all refrain from sharing unverified information. IISER Pune said that the incident is “deeply distressing” and has caused concern among the students, faculty, staff, and its community.

“Our entire community mourns this profound loss, and our thoughts and deepest condolences are with their family, friends, and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,” the institute said.

IISER Pune is also holding a condolence meeting at the auditorium, Lecture Hall Complex (LHC), to mourn the demise of the student.

‘You are not alone’: IISER Pune director

Following the demise of the student, the IISER Pune director has advised students to reach out to the campus mental wellness center or any staff member if they need someone to talk to.

“Please remember that you are not alone, and it is important to support one another as we grieve. For anyone who needs support, counseling services are available,” the director said.

The director has shared the timelines of the event in his statement.

IISER Pune learned about the tragic demise of Paul on the institute campus around 10 pm on August 16.

Around 9:45 pm, the student was found “fallen and seriously injured” outside a hostel building on campus. At 9:48 pm, the security supervisor was informed of the incident by a female security officer.

The IISER Pune ambulance was subsequently called, and the student was transported to AIIMS hospital, accompanied by the security supervisor and three other students. The police were informed around the same time. At approximately 10:15 pm, the institute was informed by AIIMS Hospital that the student had passed away.
