IIT BHU director Amit Patra takes over additional charge of IIT Kharagpur
IIT Kharagpur: The appointment follows the vacancy created by former IIT Kharagpur director, VK Tewari. Patra will serve till a regular director is appointed or till further orders.

NEW DELHI: The Director of Institute of Technology (IIT) BHU, Amit Patra has assumed the additional charge of the director at IIT Kharagpur. The appointment came as the former director of IIT Kharagpur, VK Tewari, who was also a professor of IIT Kharagpur vacated the position.
As per the official press release, Patra will hold this position till the regular incumbent takes over or till further orders, whichever is earlier. The takeover took place at the institution in the presence of the deputy director of IIT Kharagpur, Rintu Banerjee, and Amit Jain, registrar at the institute, along with other senior faculty and staff members of IIT Kharagpur.
Amit Patra completed his BTech, MTech, and PhD from the IIT Kharagpur in 1984, 1986, and 1990, respectively. He joined the Department of Electrical Engineering at IIT Kharagpur in 1987 as a faculty member.
Patra's administrative roles
As per the institute, Patra also served in many administrative positions between 2007 and 2013 and was the professor-in-charge of the advanced VLSI design lab at IIT Kharagpur during 2004-07.
As the professor in charge of the VLSI design laboratory, he played a key role in expanding the chip design activity of the laboratory and setting up a test facility. During his tenure, the laboratory received funding of about USD 1 million from multinational corporations such as National Semiconductor, Intel, and Synopsys.
Patra received the Young Engineer Award from the Indian National Academy of Engineering in 1996, the Young Teachers Career Award in 1995, and the Samsung Innovation Award. He was also recently recognised as one of the top contributors to engineering publications in India by a DST survey for 2002-2014.
