IIT Bombay opens application portal for MDes admissions; apply by March 23

IIT Bombay Admissions 2026: A total of 68 candidates will be admitted to the MDes programme and 10 to the MDes by Research course. The admission process includes a written test and interview.

The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) has opened the application window for admission to its MDes, and MDes by Research programmes today. Eligible candidates can apply for the Master of Design (MDes) courses through the official websites at acad.iitb.ac.in and portal.iitb.ac.in by March 23, 2026.

The engineering institute will admit a total of 68 students for its MDes programme, and 10 for MDes by Research for the academic year 2026-27. The admission portal will also accept MDes applications by March 26 up to 5 pm with a late fee of Rs 500 per stream.

The institute will conduct the MDes and MDes by research written test at IDC School of Design on May 8, and the interviews for MDes will be held on May 9 and 10.

MDes admission results will be displayed on IIT Bombay’s official website on June 1, 2026.

IIT Bombay's MDEs Programme: Eligibility, fee

As per the eligibility criteria, candidates seeking admission to MDes programmes at IIT Bombay should have at least 55% marks (50% for Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), Persons with Disability (PwD)) or equivalent grades in the qualifying degree for individual streams.

They should also have a valid Common Entrance Examination for Design 2026 (CEED) score. Similarly, those applying for the MDes by Research programme must have a minimum of 60% marks (55% marks in case of SC/ST/PwD) or equivalent grades in the qualifying degree for individual streams.

“A valid CEED score is required for aii applicants except those having Undergraduate or Postgraduate Degree (BDes/MDes/ MArch) from lITs with a minimum CGPA/CPI of 8.00 (on 0-10 scale) and above),” according to the official notification.

Men belonging to General and Other Backward Classes (OBC) candidates should have to pay Rs 300 as MDes application fee, while Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), and Persons With Disability (PwD) applicants can pay Rs 150 as registration charges.

The MDes programme application fee for female applicants for all categories is capped at Rs 150. Whereas, the registration charges for third gender applicants belonging to General and OBC is Rs 300 and Rs 150 for SC, ST, PwD.

According to the admission process in the official brochure, candidates will be given seats after a written test and interview for each of the stream, or programme.

The written test may include a material or studio test, which will be communicated to the applicants to be called for a written test and interview.
