IIT Delhi celebrates 67th Foundation Day; highlights over 271 international collaborations, global footprint

NEW DELHI: Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi celebrated its 67th foundation day today, January 27 with a focus on excellence in education, research, and innovation that drives societal progress. The event highlighted IIT Delhi’s role in shaping future leaders, solving real-world problems, and driving innovation across various sectors.

In his opening remarks, Director Professor Rangan Banerjee emphasised that the institution’s primary stakeholders—its students—have been excelling in both academics and extracurricular pursuits. He highlighted IIT Delhi's continued focus on addressing real-world challenges, through high-impact publications, patents, and pioneering research that tackles global issues.

Over 271 international research collaborations

A key feature of the Foundation Day celebrations was the launch of a new booklet showcasing IIT Delhi’s diverse research landscape. Presented by Professor Vivek Buwa, Dean of Planning, the booklet provided an in-depth look at over 271 international research collaborations and IIT Delhi’s role in global innovation.

The research involves a wide range of fields, such as quantum computing, healthcare, rural development, and sustainability. IIT Delhi is also a partner in the National Quantum Mission, advancing India’s capabilities in quantum technologies. The booklet highlighted IIT Delhi’s collaborations with prominent universities such as Queensland University and Taiwan University, which facilitate joint degree programs aimed at fostering global talent.

Over 50 startups on defense technologies

IIT Delhi has emerged as a powerhouse for innovation, with more than 50 startups focused on defense technologies and over 25 startups working on greentech and biomass solutions. The institution’s role in supporting defense innovation was further highlighted by the announcement of its new Defense Research Center, in collaboration with DRDO, which aims to drive the development of advanced technologies for the Indian Armed Forces.

New Campuses and Global Presence

In line with its vision to globalize its impact, IIT Delhi is also expanding its reach internationally. The institution’s new campus in Sonipat, Haryana, serves as a hub for startups and innovation, with more than 25 startups currently incubated there.

The upcoming Abu Dhabi campus will further strengthen IIT Delhi’s global footprint by hosting international startups and fostering innovation across borders.

Rs 645 crore HEFA loan

CSR funding has expanded in the last 6 years. Many Centre of Excellence within the campus are supported by CSR. This is a recent trend and expanding. IIT Delhi has made significant use of the Rs 645 crore loan from the Higher Education Financing Agency (HEFA), with over Rs 200 crore allocated to advanced equipment, post-doctoral fellowships, and enhancing research infrastructure.

This funding has strengthened the institute’s capabilities in both academics and research. However, as the institution’s needs grow, additional financial support remains crucial. "While HEFA funding has been invaluable, we have received more than 60% of the budget, but we need more to continue our growth and meet future demands."
