IIT Delhi: PhD admission without GATE for NIT Agartala students

NEW DELHI: The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) has signed an agreement with National Institute of Technology-Agartala which allows students of NIT Agartala to be considered for direct admission into PhD at IIT Delhi, bypassing the GATE.

Students of BTech and integrated BTech-MTech (dual-degree) programmes at NIT-Agartala will be allowed to do a semester-long internship project and other courses at IIT Delhi and will be considered for direct admission into PhD. To be considered, they must maintain a cumulative grade-point average – CGPA – of 8 or above in their sixth (or eighth in dual-degree courses) semester.

If selected, these students will not be required to write the GATE, or Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering, which regulates admissions into postgraduate programmes at the IITs.

'Enhance research output'

“The [memorandum of understanding] will enable meritorious students of NIT Agartala to do part of their study and project at IIT Delhi, and also avail early admission in PhD Programme. This will not only help them but also IIT Delhi in enhancing its research output,” said V. Ramgopal Rao, director, IIT Delhi.

HK Sharma, director, NIT Agartala, added: “This collaboration will create unique exposure to the students of NIT Agartala and competitive environment to the graduates of IITD, which will bring both the institutions closer in different areas of academics and research.”
