NEW DELHI: “It's been stressful, difficult 2 years. We want a 3rd attempt for JEE Advanced,” a student wrote on Twitter demanding an extra attempt in the coming year for the IIT entrance examination. A section of students, who cleared Class 12 exams in 2020, told that they couldn't appear for the exam due to the COVID-induced disruption caused in the education sector and demanded a third attempt in Joint Entrance Examination Advanced (JEE Advanced) 2022 to get admission in the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). They also cited mental health issues and lack of study material and guidance to crack the engineering entrance examination.

As per the criteria, a student who clears Class 12 exam will get three chances to appear for JEE Main and two attempts in JEE Advanced.
Pointing to this rule, JEE Advanced 2020 candidates in a petition asked, “If a student does not appear/could not qualify JEE Mains in his first attempt (class 12th) then why his attempt for JEE Advanced, the next year is considered second even if he didn't appear for it the previous year...”

Saying that the medical entrance exams like AIIMS has no limit on number of attempts but only age criteria, the petition further said, “The present system of JEE creates undue pressure on students .Especially rural and poor students are more sufferer since they generally start their preparation after class 12 and are left with only one attempt for JEE ADVANCED.”
Demanding an extra attempt, a candidate said, “I didn't even apply for JEE Advanced 2020. Then how could you count that as my first attempt? What's the stupid logic behind it?”
Tagging IIT Kharagpur and education minister Dharmendra Pradhan, a candidate wrote on Twitter, “#JEEAdvancedExtraAttempt Thousands of students lost their parents, family members in this pandemic. They couldn't prepare for JEE Advanced which is one of the most toughest examination of the world, Please Do justice with them and allow 1 more Attempt…”

“Every year around 2.5 lakhs candidates qualify for JEE Advanced but only ~1.5 lakh appear for it. Why waste those 1 lakh? We deserve a 3rd attempt for JEE Advanced as 2020 batch was the first to face the lockdown Covid!,” another student said.
