NEW DELHI: Yet another IIT placement data revealed drop in job offers and average salary package. Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur) in a RTI reply said that a total of 372 students are yet to be placed in the 2023-24 placement drive. Currently, the number of students who are not placed through campus placement is twice compared to the previous two years.
Dheeraj Singh, an alumnus of IIT Kanpur and founder of Global IIT Alumni Support Group, had filed an RTI application seeking information pertaining to IIT Kanpur placement data from the academic year 2021 to 2024. However, unsatisfied with the Central Public Information Officer (CPIO), the appellant filed another appeal alleging that the CPIO refused to provide information.
Later, the registrar provided the data of IIT Kanpur placements 2023-24. According to which, a total of 1,417 students registered for the placement drive in 2023-24. Among the registered students, 1,045 students got placed, whereas 372 students did not get a job offer, as of May 17. The placement data may differ after the final report.
The average salary package was at Rs 24.4 lakh per annum and median salary was Rs 18 lakh per annum. The data shared in the RTI response does not include MBA placement details.

A IIT-K student told Careers360 in December that around 450 companies took part in this year’s placement drive. “The situation was far better last year. Every year, a better number of students bag PPOs, which makes way for other candidates to have a better shot at placement when the season begins,” said the student. Till the end of Phase 1 last year, 1,128 students were placed with 208 PPOs extended by companies.
