IIT Madras hosts Energy Summit 2023 on green hydrogen, carbon markets, energy efficiency

NEW DELHI: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT Madras) Energy Consortium is hosting its annual summit from December 5 to 8 December 2023. More than 300 delegates are taking part, including over 40 international speakers representing Australia, UK, US, Italy, South Korea, and Japan, in IIT Madras Energy Summit 2023.

The IIT Madras Energy Summit 2023 has multiple themes, including ‘Energy storage and green hydrogen’; ‘Carbon markets, energy economics and climate finance’; Energy efficiency, energy management and modelling, sustainable buildings’; and ‘Microgrids, power conversion systems and power electronics’.

During the summit carbon dioxide capture demonstrator was launched to aid industries and researchers demonstrate technology scale-up. The delegates also agreed to increase collaboration with more academic and industrial partners to address the technology transition for decarbonisation goals of the government. An energy audit application for use by MSME, Energy auditors and other industries was also launched.

A special magazine issue ‘Path to decarbonisation’, which comprises a series of articles by energy experts from academia, industry and government, was unveiled on the occasion.

Energy Summit 2023 convenor Satyanarayanan Seshadri said, “Developing resilience in our energy systems and addressing holistic development of technologies is imperative. This can only be achieved by collective action. The Energy Summit at IITM is one of the major global platform that is driving this.”

Other speakers include Mahesh Panchagnula, Dean (Alumni and Corporate Relations), IIT Madras. There were also two high panels deliberated on ‘Alternate fuels and green H2’ and ‘Importance of digitalisation in energy transition’.

Bhima Sastri, director of energy asset transformations), Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management, Department of Energy, US, said “The US DoE Energy Earthshots initiative aims to accelerate breakthroughs of more abundant, affordable, and reliable clean energy solutions within the decade. Hydrogen shots seek to reduce the cost of clean hydrogen by 80% to $1 per 1 Kilogram in 1 decade. Carbon management spans a value chain of technologies and infrastructure such as carbon capture, carbon dioxide removal, transport, conversion and permanent storage.”
