NEW DELHI: A total of 10,857 faculty positions have been filled in the central universities, Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), and the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) from September 2022 to December 2024, Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan told Lok Sabha.

In a span of 10 years, from May 2014 to December 2024, the institutions have made a total of 53,456 recruitments for both faculty and non-faculty positions. From May 2014 to March 2022, a total of 26,705 vacancies were filled while from September 2022 to December 2024, a total of 26,751 including 15,637 faculty positions were filled up during the Mission Mode Recruitment drive.

During the same time period, central universities, IIMs and IITs have filled up 18,757 vacancies, of which 10,857 are faculty positions including 1,347 Scheduled Caste (SC), 579 Scheduled Tribe (ST) and 2,219 Other Backward Classes (OBC).

When asked about the details of number of appointments, de-reservation of posts, category-wise vacancies, and implementation of reservation rules, Pradhan explained that the institutions conduct faculty recruitments on their own and the ministry has no role.

“As autonomous institutions, faculty recruitment is done within the institutions itself, in accordance with their respective Acts and Regulations and also in accordance with Central Educational Institutions (Reservation in Teachers Cadre) Act, 2019. The recruitment powers vest with the respective Board of Governors (BoGs)/Executive Committee/Board of Management and no active role of the Ministry is involved therein,” he said in his reply.

Vacancies in CUs, IITs, IIMs

Explaining that the occurrence of vacancies is a continuous process, Pradhan said that the vacancies arise due to promotion, retirement, resignation, death, opening of new institutions, schemes or projects, and additional requirements on account of enhanced students’ strength and expansion of capacity in existing institutions.

Among the steps taken by the government for ensuring implementation of reservation norms are the Central Educational Institutions (Reservation in Teachers Cadre) Act, 2019, Flexi Cadre System in faculty recruitments, year-round open advertisements, recruitment through search-cum-selection procedures, special recruitment drive, mission mode recruitment and invitation to alumni, scientists, faculty, and more.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has also launched a common portal ‘CU-CHAYAN’ for faculty recruitment, making provision for listing of vacancies, advertisements, and jobs across all central universities, Dharmendra Pradhan added.
