NEW DELHI: Researchers in Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras have developed an Artificial Intelligence, or AI-powered drone that can counter “rogue drones”, the institute said in a statement.

It can help agencies secure airspace over critical civilian and military installations as it can detect rogue drones visually using algorithms powered by AI, the statement further said. These drones can find use in law enforcement.

How it works

This drone tracks down the ‘rogue drones’ visually, hacks their GPS navigation systems and forces them to change their flight path or land safely.

It can be controlled using the internet and can navigate autonomously as compared to most existing drones that need to remain within the operator’s view.

The AI-powered drones will also be able to deploy a swarm of drones which can be given a task of intelligently detecting and tracking other drones, people, vehicles and objects.

The designers

The AI-powered drone was designed by Vasu Gupta, a final year BTech student and Rishabh Vashistha, a project associate. Both are in the Department of Aerospace Engineering, IIT Madras. Their teacher, Ranjith Mohan, guided the team.
