IIT Patna expects 6,900 students on campus by 2028, plans faculty recruitment after IIT expansion plans outlined in Union budget 2025.
NEW DELHI: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Patna is looking forward to enhancing its infrastructure and increasing student enrolment, following the government’s announcement on plans to expand the IITs in union budget 2025.
Talking to Careers360 , IIT Patna said that currently there are around 3,900 students on campus and it is expecting to on-board 6,900 students by the year 2028. Keeping this target on its plate, the institute will execute its expansion plans . A research park for aspiring entrepreneurs, swimming pools, hostels for students, an international hostel for students from foreign countries are on the cards.
The IIT has demanded Rs 800 crore from the centre for its upgradation, but there is no such confirmation, it said.
“The focus on IIT Patna in budget 2025 has helped in perception development that will in-turn help the institute grow. Older IITs are known but following this the perception of the institute has changed, which will help the students and the state. Previously, we used to approach companies for placements while many weren't aware of its credibility. The focus on the institute in the education budget will help us in all directions. It's a big thing for us,” the institute stated.
Notably, the education ministry has added a new parameter -- perception (PR) ranking -- in the National Institutional Ranking Framework ( NIRF ), which ranks higher educational institutions across India.
IIT Patna expansion plan
IIT Patna is also going to focus on fields including environmental engineering, electronics engineering, artificial intelligence (AI), semi-conductors, as per a Hindustan Times report. There is a need to hire more faculty members while providing them with residential facilities, the institute has been reported as saying.
Further, the institute has received a Rs 125 crore grant, jointly funded by the centre and the state, for a technological park. Not only IIT Patna is planning to launch a management programme but also considering developing two new academic blocks to have separate engineering departments which are currently running under the same building, the report added.
