IIT Roorkee, Niigata University to offer double PhD programme

NEW DELHI: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee and Niigata University, Japan, have launched a double PhD programme. The double PhD programme students will get research opportunities in fields like artificial intelligence, machine learning, renewable energy, and others.

The initiative aims to enhance research opportunities and strengthen ties between Indian and Japanese academic institutions. The agreement was signed by KK Pant, Director of IIT Roorkee, and Matsuo Masayuki, Dean of the Graduate School of Science and Technology, Niigata University.

IIT Roorkee Double PhD Programme: Research areas

Under this initiative, doctoral students will have the opportunity to earn degrees from both IIT Roorkee and Niigata University. The double PhD programme facilitates student and researcher exchange, granting access to diverse academic resources and mentorship.

Under the double PhD programme, research areas covered include artificial intelligence, energy systems, climate change, nanotechnology, earthquake engineering, hydrology, information technology, biotechnology, robotics, disaster resilience, and environmental sciences.

IIT Roorkee-Niigata university collaboration

The IIT Roorkee- Niigata University partnership began with the visit of Tatsuo Ushiki, President of Niigata University, to IIT Roorkee. Subsequent discussions between both institutions laid the foundation for the agreement. A delegation from IIT Roorkee, including Pant and senior faculty members, later visited Niigata University to finalise details and explore further cooperation.

KK Pant emphasized that the collaboration would enhance students' research capabilities and strengthen academic ties with Japan. “This collaboration reflects our commitment to global academic engagement. The Double Degree Program will enhance students’ research capabilities and further strengthen our academic and research ties with Niigata University,” said Pant.

Matsuo Masayuki said that the programme would foster skilled researchers and contribute to solving global challenges through joint academic efforts. Masayuki said, “We are excited to work with IIT Roorkee on this program, which will nurture talented researchers and contribute to addressing global challenges through joint efforts.”
