IIT Roorkee’s Design Innovation Center holds summit to tackle Himalayan challenges

NEW DELHI, MAY 22: The Design Innovation Center (DIC) at IIT Roorkee organized a summit on the design innovation challenges in the Himalayan Region. Various NGOs, scientists, and academicians participated in the event and highlighted the issues they face in the field.

The event saw discussions on several issues in the region such as sustainable development, cottage industry, agriculture, livelihood, clean water, transportation, medical facilities, education and technological development.

The summit provided opportunities to different DICs to select their problems and identify potential field collaborators. It is expected to usher in a new dimension in working of DICs where they can utilize the design approach to provide cost-effective and sustainable solutions.

“The Himalayan region holds a lot of significance for us, not just culturally, but we believe it is our duty to come up with solutions to the various challenges that people living in this region face. This summit has been conceived in order to take this endeavour forward through our Design Innovation Centre,” said Prof. Ajit K. Chaturvedi, Director, IIT Roorkee.

The DIC at IIT Roorkee was set up under the National Initiative for Design Innovation scheme to address the problems of the Himalayan Region.
