NEW DELHI, JUNE 8: The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) to improve the gender balance for the first time have created 800 supernumerary seats for female candidates. This year IITs through Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) is offering a total of 11,279 seats an increase of 291 seats from 2017.

In line with previous years, supernumerary seats will be created to accommodate foreign candidates
along with DS candidates (with a restriction of maximum 2 DS candidates per IIT) who qualify JEE (Advanced) 2018.

This year around 800 supernumerary seats have been created specifically for female candidates in the IITs in order to improve the gender balance in IITs and as per directives of the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD).

As per provisions, total supernumerary seats created cannot exceed 10 percent of the total seats being offered in the IITs.
