NEW DELHI: International Youth Day is celebrated every year on August 12 to create awareness and draw attention to the cultural and legal issues about youth.
The first International Youth Day was celebrated on August 12, 2000. It was adopted by the United Nations in the year 1999. Over the years, IYD was celebrated on different themes such as youth’s mental health, their role in eradicating poverty, building peace, safe spaces for youth, etc.
The theme of the International Youth Day 2022 is ‘Intergenerational Solidarity: Creating a World for All Ages’. “The objective of International Youth Day 2022 is to amplify the message that action is needed across all generations to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and leave no one behind. It will also raise awareness on certain barriers to intergenerational solidarity, notably ageism, which impacts young and old persons, while having detrimental effects on society as a whole,” reads the official website of the UN.
Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan tweeted, “Greetings to our talented Yuva Shakti on #InternationalYouthDay. Today, let us reaffirm our commitment to further strengthen the skills, education, employment and entrepreneurship landscape to fulfil aspirations of our young demography and to transform them into global citizens.”
