NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court today dismissed the petition seeking postponement of NEET 2020 and JEE Main, scheduled in September. Earlier, eleven students from 11 states filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL), in SC demanding postponement of JEE Main and NEET 2020.
The Supreme Court while dismissing the postponement petition observed that postponement of the NEET 2020 and JEE will put the 'career of students in jeopardy'. Nearly 25 lakh students have registered to appear for the national level engineering and medical entrance examinations scheduled to be held in September.
A total of four petitions have also been filed in the SC praying that the NEET and JEE should not be postponed. Gujarat parents association’s petition seeking no-postponement was listed with petition of 11 students seeking postponement today.
Supreme Court judgement on NEET 2020
The students had approached the apex court demanding that the two examinations be postponed to December amidst growing cases of coronavirus pandemic. The students raised their concern related to safety inside and outside the exam centres including issues related to transport facilities.
Before the Supreme Court judgement on NEET 2020 and JEE Main 2020, a group of parents under the banner of India Wide Parents Association (IWPA), also approached the Centre by writing to the ministry of home affairs and education minister, Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, seeking postponement
The group through its letter urged Pokhriyal to postpone JEE 2020 and NEET 2020 and stated that they do not want cancellation of the exam. The letter to the education minister read: “What we are demanding is a postponement in this unprecedented time to avoid any loss in any form be it life or career.”
