J&K likely to get 200 more MBBS seats under EWS quota; four new medical colleges start MBBS courses in 2019

New Delhi, June 10 : In a major development, the Medical Council of India (MCI) may add 200 more MBBS seats in the current academic year in the state of Jammu and Kashmir for economically disadvantaged children. The proposal was forwarded by J&K government, who urged the MCC to allow state medical colleges in the state to raise their MBBS intake capacity by at least 10 percent.
The new seats, when they are formally sanctioned, will be available under economically weaker section (EWS) quota.
The proposal submitted by the J&K government is in line with the scheme that allows medical colleges to increase seat intake so that such seats can be offered to students who are economically weak.
It may also be recalled that the 10 percent reservation bill that was approved by the Parliament earlier in the year also makes provisions for reservation of jobs and education for the economically disadvantaged. Also, all such reservations will be adjusted against general category seats.
The Commissioner Secretary, Health and Medical Education Department J&K, AtalDulloo, while speaking on the recent developments, said that some 199 seats would be added through EWS scheme. He also reiterated that all the existing and new medical colleges have already submitted proposals to avail the scheme.
