Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has dismissed Professor Angomcha Bimol Akoijam over allegations of sexual harassment following an inquiry conducted by the university’s Internal Committee (IC), according to an official order issued earlier today. The order stated that Akoijam, a professor at the Centre for the Study of Social Systems under the School of Social Sciences, has been dismissed from the university’s services with immediate effect.
The order further highlights that the internal committee conducted an inquiry into the allegations of sexual harassment against the professor. Based on its findings, the committee recommended major punishment.
The university clarified that the decision to dismiss the professor was taken after following due process and considering all available facts, as well as the report submitted by the Internal Committee.
“Upon following the due process and considering all available facts and as per the report of the Internal Committee, the punishment of dismissal from the services of the university is hereby imposed,” the order stated.
The order was signed by JNU Vice-Chancellor Santishree D Pandit. It also cited the applicable service rules and Rule 11(ix) of the Central Civil Services (Classification, Control and Appeal) Rules while imposing the punishment.
The dismissal order names Akoijam as a professor at the Centre for the Study of Social Systems, School of Social Sciences, and directs that the punishment take effect immediately.
