NEW DELHI: The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has announced that JNU Student Union elections 2023-24 will be conducted between six to eight weeks from the date of commencement of PhD admissions. JNU will begin the PhD admission from February 2, 2024.

“This is to bring to the kind notice of all concerned that JNU Student Union Elections 2023-2024 will be held between 6 to 8 weeks from the date of commencement of the academic session for PhD students, i.e., February 2, 2024,” the university said in an official notice.

The university explained that JNUSU elections will have to be conducted in strict compliance of Lyngdoh committee report and Supreme Court guidelines on student elections in colleges and universities.

“We kindly request the cooperation of all students in ensuring fair and orderly elections. Detailed guidelines from the office of dean of students will be shared in due course,” JNU added.

Earlier today, the students’ union called for a 'university strike' on January 30 demanding notification of students union elections. The students union submitted a fresh memorandum to vice-chancellor Santishree D Pandit to conduct the JNUSU elections and revoke the CPO manual and disciplinary action against the students.

JNU VC had earlier said that the university does not have an officially notified students union as the matter is subjudice and added that the administration is committed to holding the students union elections in accordance with the Lyngdoh committee recommendations.

The elections in the JNU have not been held since the last four years. The last JNUSU election was held in 2019. As per the Lyngdoh Committee, the JNUSU elections should be held within six to eight weeks of the commencement of the academic session, which has been pushed further due to delayed PhD admissions.

Meanwhile, as per the newly released academic calendar, the classes for the PhD students will start from February 2. The admission process for the same has to be completed before the commencement of the classes to start the process of holding the elections.
