Kerala shuts schools, colleges in 9 districts amid heavy rainfall; IMD issues red alert

The Government of Kerala has announced holidays for all educational institutions, including colleges, professional institutions, schools, tuition centres, madrasas, anganwadis, and special classes across the state due to the southwest monsoon rains, as reported by The Hindu.

A total of 9 districts in Kerala have been severely affected by the torrential rainfall, prompting the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red alert in several regions.

The IMD has forecast “extremely heavy rainfall” exceeding 204.4 mm in a single day, raising concerns about possible flooding and landslides.

The district administrations have declared a holiday for all schools in the Chikkamagaluru, Hassan, and Shivamogga districts on Monday, The Hindu reported.

Classes in various educational institutions in Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Wayanad, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasardog have been suspended due to torrential rain until further notice.

Meanwhile, according to the IMD forecast, there will be cloudy weather for the next three days and heavy to very heavy rainfall across various parts of the city in Guwahati.

The Kerala government has advised people to avoid travel to hilly or flood-prone regions and to stay updated with alerts from local authorities.
