The Manipur government has announced that all educational institutions will remain closed today, September 17, due to heavy rainfall and floods in Imphal valley and other parts of the state. The government has taken a step to ensure the safety and well-being of students and faculty members.

According to media reports, the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) stated that heavy rainfall in the state has triggered multiple landslides in several districts, resulting in infrastructural and farmland damage. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted more rainfall for 2 days.

According to state officials, two rivers breached their embankments in different parts of Manipur’s Imphal Valley on Sunday night, flooding large tracts of agricultural land and residential areas. A relief camp set up at Wangjing Kodompokpi Sports Complex was also severely waterlogged.

The Iril river overflowed at Kshetrigao, inundating farmland, residential areas, and roads in Imphal East district, and the Wangjing river was also flowing above the danger level, submerging Sangaiyumpham and Wangjing areas in Thoubal district.

Furthermore, the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) Imphal has issued a circular, effective immediately, due to an increase in water levels within and around the hospital complex, and for the safety of patients. All current inpatients are to be evacuated from the hospital wards with immediate effect, and no new admissions will be accepted until further notice. With inputs from PTI
