NEW DELHI: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved MBBS admission in the two medical colleges and hospitals in Jharkhand, Banna Gupta, health minister of Jharkhand announced on Wednesday morning. The admissions have been approved in Palamu and Hazaribag medical colleges.

MBBS admission has been permitted in two state-run medical colleges in Jharkhand,” says the tweet by Banna Gupta, health minister of Jharkhand.

“I had requested Mansukh Mandaviya, the union health minister, many times, to take care of the future of the children of the state. The government will take care of these medical colleges. We will ensure a better educational system”, said Gupta.

These medical colleges were established in 2019. A survey conducted previously at the Hazaribag medical college showed the acute shortage of faculty members. Same was the case with the medical colleges in Dumka and Daltonganj. The NMC had banned admissions for the 2020-21 session during the covid-19 pandemic last year. This has made a loss of 300 MBBS seats to the state of Jharkhand. The ban was imposed last year citing resource crunch, lack of infrastructure and faculty.

“We are providing the medical colleges with the necessary resources. To deal with the shortage of faculties, we are hiring associate professors on a contractual basis,” the minister told the Times of India.

The NMC had also granted permission to the Phulo Jhano Medical College and Hospital in Dumka to conduct admissions to various courses. But MBBS admissions in all three medical colleges were put on hold. The lift of ban on these medical colleges now will provide Jharkhand with 630 MBBS seats.
