Andhra Pradesh gets nod from Centre for three medical colleges: Report

NEW DELHI: The central government has given green signal to three new medical colleges in Andhra Pradesh, the Times of India reported.

Bharati Pravin Pawar, union minister for health and family welfare reportedly told Rajya Sabha that the centre has approved medical colleges to be established at Paderu, Machilipatnam, and Piduguralla. He was replying to a question regarding the status of 16 medical colleges being set up by the AP government.

The minister also said that the Centre has okayed the proposal of upgrading existing medical colleges in the state including Siddhartha Medical College in Vijayawada, Government Medical College at Anantapur and Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences at Tirupati under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojna (PMSSY), the report said.

Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu government recently announced to start 17 new medical colleges with 2,350 MBBS seats becoming the state with the highest number of medical colleges in the country, as per reports.

With the addition of new colleges, the state will have 69 medical colleges offering more than 10,000 medical seats which is the highest in India, according to the National Medical Commission (NMC) website.

Besides, the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS) is going to set up a postgraduate medical college, which will be called Maharashtra Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research Institute. The union ministry of health and family welfare and NMC have sanctioned this initiative, as per report.
