Medical admissions: MBBS and PG seats to increase for 10% under EWS scheme

NEW DELHI, April 24: The Board of Governors (BoG) in supersession of Medical Council of India (MCI) has requested all the MBBS and PG medical colleges to send the proposal for increase of 10% Economically Weaker Section (EWS) quota seats. MCI BoG released a notice concerning over the implementation of 10% reservation for EWS for admission in government medical colleges, under the control of state governments.
10% reservation for EWS categories for PG admission will effectuate from the academic year 2020-21. While the reservation for 10% increase in MBBS seats under the scheme will be executed from the academic year 2019-20. Though, the medical colleges should ensure that the proposal submitted for increase of 10% EWS quota shall be for the seats that has been recognised as on the day of proposal received by MCI, as mentioned in the notice.
The Secretary General of MCI BoG, Dr. R. K. Vats has requested the PG government medical colleges to submit their proposals latest by May 15, 2019, for the EWS scheme. The proposals to be delivered in consultation with the Directorate of Medical Education (DMEs) of respective states under section 10A of the Indian Medical Act, 1956.

EWS reservation for MBBS admissions
With the above mentioned particulars, the notice also states that “MBBS colleges should also insure that the additional facility in increase of 10% seats will be implemented as per the Minimum Standard Requirement for the Medical College for 50/100/150/200/250 Admissions Annually Regulations 1999, by the time the respective increase in intake capacity of the college comes up for recognition.”
For instance, the most sought-after Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi, offers 250 MBBS seats to a medical aspirant. With the addition of 10% seats under EWS scheme will lead to an increase of 25 seats in the particular college.
College and Course wise proposals
With the release of MCI BoG notice, the consolidated college-wise and individual courses in the medical colleges has also been provided, which must be sent to the office by May 15. The college-wise information includes name of programmes offered, existing intake capacity and the number of seats to be increased in the year 2020-21 as per EWS scheme.
However, in the individual course details, the course name, subject name, intake capacity, recognized and permitted seats and proposed increase of seats should be mentioned carefully.
