NEW DELHI: The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) will be setting up a project monitoring unit to monitor the progress of Institutions of Eminence (IoEs) and the activities they undertake.

The decision was taken during a recent high-level meeting to review the progress of the public and private institutions which were considered for the IoE status on the advice of the Empowered Expert Committee constituted by the University Grants Commission, or UGC.

During the meeting, it was also decided that these institutions will invite Nobel laureates, academics, professors and foreign faculty to visit Indian educational institutions.

As per a statement issued by the Ministry, “Entire architecture for giving access to Research Journals to be reviewed and open access may be provided to the institutions under IoE.” The government has also decided to release all the balance amount for the year 2019-20 and new funds in the current financial year.

It was also decided that these institutions may adapt and develop model villages as part of the Unnat Bharat scheme for sustainable development in rural India.

During the meeting, the Union HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ also reviewed the status of infrastructure and human resource in these institutions and assured maximum support to them.

Centre in 2017 launched IoE scheme to empower higher education institutions and to help them become world-class teaching and research institutions. Under the scheme, ten public and ten private institutions have been identified to emerge as world-class teaching and research institutions.
